My Quest seeker package

My Quest seeker package

Today I completed all the things in my Quest Seekers package. I made a dragon and put my stickers on the poster to complete the picture.

I had a gold medal for reading all the books which I keep in my box of treasures along with my very special tihngs.

My favourite book that I read for the challenge was “My secret Unicorn”  by Linda Chapman. It’s about a horse who turns into a Unicorn at night time.

A sound safari!

Picking blackberries and listening to sounds in the country

Picking blackberries and listening to sounds in the country

Today we went on a sound safari! I had a  sheet with sounds on and I had to tick them off when I heard them. I heard rustling, tweeting, buzzing, barking, trickling and crunchy leaves.

When I got back home I drew pictures of all the things I heard.

Then Mummy played me some sounds and I had to tell her what they were - I got the woodpecker, cow, sheep, bees and frog, but the crickets and cuckoo were hard!

I put an Owl sticker on my Nature Detectives poster because I was such a good listener.

We are going to do an experiment later in the week too. You have to listen to crickets and you count how many chirps they do in 15 seconds. Then you add 40 and it’s supposed to tell you the temperature in degrees. We were going to do that this morning, but the crickets weren’t singing. I will need to take a timer and thermometer with me to see if it works.

We also had a nice surprise from Mother Nature when we were out. She gave us some more blackberries. I’m going to find some apples in the garden and make a blackberry and apple pie for lunch.

Potato harvest

Part of Verona's potato harvest

Part of Verona's potato harvest

I’ve been promising for ages that I would write final totals for Verona’s spectacular potato harvest. You might remember she took part in the potato council’s “Potatoes for schools” scheme. She was sent two rocket potatoes and two vale emerald potatoes to plant.

She planted them at the end of march

Earthed them up at the beginning of May

and dug up and ate her first crop at the end of June

Well she had a massive harvest! We were supposed to grow the potatoes in black plastic sacks, but we put ours in the ground and had:

  • 370 gms of Rocket
  • 610 gms of Vale Emerald

a few weeks later she dug up:

  • 725 gms of Rocket and finally
  • 884 gms of Vale Emerald!

All in all it was a monster harvest of over 2.5 kgs and she proved to herself that leaving them in the ground longer meant a bigger harvest. As boiled potatoes with butter is one of her favourite things to eat, she was very pleased!
