Making a comfy bed for the worms

Making a comfy bed for the worms

We got a wormery from Wiggly Wigglers!

We spent a long time setting it up to make the worms comfy. There are 4 layers - one at the bottom to collect liquid. Mummy says the plants love this liquid.

The next layer is the worms bathroom where they leave us compost.

The one on top of that is their bedroom and in the top layer you put food - that’s their dining room. Worms eat things like fruit and vegetable peelings, plate scrapings, tea and coffee grounds, egg shells, shredded paper and cardboard and even the contents of our hoover and hair brushes!

When they are happy and settled they will eat about half their body weight of stuff every day and leave us compost to say thank you for their food.

It’s going to be my job to look after them and give them the right amount of food. Right now they just have two layers and when they are happy and settled we can add more. They haven’t eaten much yet, but it can take weeks or even months for them to feel happy. I’ll let you know how they get on!

What’s it worth?

Bunty magazine - Mummy's used to cost 10p

Bunty magazine - Mummy

We found a great website today. I like to know what things were worth in the olden days. Mummy used to get a magazine called Bunty that cost 10p. My magazines are about £3. If you type amounts into the ‘measuring worth‘ website you can see old and new values.

Bunty is still good value because it would cost me the equivalent of about 32p now.

For Mummy to have bought my magazine, she would have needed £9.64 and Grandma would have needed £79.40! I think that’s a lot of money for a magazine don’t you?

Finding Canada on the globe

Finding Canada on the globe

Last week we did a project on Canada. We used an ebook called “All Around Canada” which one of Mummy’s friends called Becky told us about and made our own lapbook! So far we have used ready made projects for our lapbooks but this was all our own!

Some of the project I liked, but some of it I didn’t.

I liked labelling a map with the provinces, territories and capitals.
I liked learning about compass directions.
I enjoyed discovering that near Newfoundland and Labrador the Titanic had sunk. I read about the Titanic in a book but didn’t realise it was a true story. Now I want to learn more about it.
I found it amazing that Prince Edward Island was named after Queen Victoria’s father and I liked learning about rodeos in Alberta.

Here are some free lapbooking resources we think are best:

Homeschool share has all sorts of templates and tells you which are best for which type of information:

HS launch has Minibook instructions for lapbooking:

Introduction to lapbooking on Squidoo

Education station.

Homeschoolling on a shoe string.
